For more than thirty years, Amadou and Mariam, the Blind Couple from Mali, have been making beautiful music together, combining the personal with the political in singing about love, compassion, freedom, social change, and good times. Both born in Bamako, guitarist Amadou Bagayoko, who lost his sight when he was sixteen, and vocalist Mariam Doumbia, who lost hers when she was five, met at the Institute for the Blind and got married in 1980. They’ve recorded seven studio albums together since 1998, displaying their intoxicating take on world music and Afro-blues while compiling a growing list of international musicians who have recorded with them. Their latest album, Folila (Nonesuch, April 2012), which means “music,” was originally going to be two very different discs, one recorded in Bamako with traditional Mali musicians, the other in New York with indie superstars, but instead it merged into one stellar collection of twelve songs featuring such special guests as Santigold, Jake Shears of the Scissor Sisters, Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, members of Antibalas, Ebony Bones, Abdallah Oumbadougou, Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone of TV on the Radio, and Theophilus London, among others. They also collaborated on most of the record with controversial French musician Bertrand Cantat, the former leader of Noir Désir who killed his girlfriend, popular French actress Marie Trintignant, in 2003 and was paroled in 2007 after spending less than half of his eight-year sentence in prison. On the bluesy “Oh Amadou,” one of the three songs with prominent vocals from Cantat, they sing, “There are happy days / There are miserable days / There are moments of pleasure / There are moments of suffering.” Although they do get serious, they also know how to have plenty of fun. “We’re here to cheer people up and make them happy,” they explain on “Dougou Badia,” which features Santigold, continuing, “Life’s about having fun / It’s about joy and celebration.” It all comes together most fabulously on “C’est Pas Facile Pour Les Aigles,” with Amadou and Mariam joined by Ebony Bones for a rollicking song sung in multiple languages and taking on such topics as racism and immigration. The Mali duo will be headlining a free SummerStage show in Central Park on August 4 at 3:00, on a bill with funky Kenyan quartet Just a Band and Trinidad-born Brooklyn rapper London, who is likely to join Amadou and Mariam on their Folila collaboration, “Nebe Miri.”

HENRY V

Princess Katherine (Fedna Jacquet) and King Henry V (Ty Jones) are brought together in the shadow of war (photo by Ruth Sovronsky)

Classical Theatre of Harlem
Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial Center
3940 Broadway at 165th St.
Wednesday – Sunday through September 4, $20-$48
SummerStage: August 29, East River Park, free, 8:00 (August 27-28 canceled because of weather)

Henry V is just the right play for the Classical Theatre of Harlem to take on as its first full-scale production since the November 2009 departure of the company’s founders, artistic director Alfred Preisser and executive director Christopher McElroen. Under new producing director Ty Jones, CTH, which was founded in 1999 with a mission to bring high-quality, professional theater to the Harlem community, faces an uphill (primarily financial) battle that in some ways is echoed by Shakespeare’s history play, in which the far-outnumbered English army prepares to fight French forces in the 1415 Battle of Agincourt during the Hundred Years’ War. Jones, who won an OBIE for his performance in CTH’s The Blacks: A Clown Show, stars as King Henry, who has grown up since his days as Prince Hal. Now a firm, stalwart leader, the king is developing a confidence that rallies those around him, particularly after he deals with a trio of traitors and later gives one of the greatest locker-room talks ever, the St. Crispin’s Day Speech.

Directed by Jenny Bennett, this ninety-minute Henry V makes the audience, which is seated on three sides around the center of the action, feel like it’s part of the play. The actors, who are on floor level, regularly make solid eye contact with the audience, and they continually enter and exit up and down the aisles. There is actually a preshow choreographed number in which the performers sing and dance the rules of the house, building an intimate community right from the start. Rachel Dozier-Ezell’s costumes are a stylish mix of Mad Max and the Warriors, with lots of torn leather and chains, while Anka Lupes’s set design features an assembly of girders on which the characters often congregate. The acting ranges from solid to amateurish to scenery chewing; the highlights include the aforementioned St. Crispin’s speech (which could double as a dramatic pep talk to the theater company itself from its new producing director) and Carine Montbertrand’s expository tour de force as the Archbishop of Canterbury, but the comic relief offered by Nym and Pistol falls flat, and it is sometimes difficult to hear the dialogue when an actor is standing with their back directly to you. The battle scene is wonderfully choreographed as an exciting dance piece with the actors throwing forth red ribbons that represent bloody swords. All in all, Henry V signals a terrific start to the next generation of the Classical Theatre of Harlem. The play runs through September 4 at the Malcolm X & Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial Center, located within the historic Audubon Ballroom; there will also be a free outdoor 8:00 performance August 29 in East River Park on the Lower East Side as part of the annual SummerStage program. (The August 27-28 shows have been canceled because of Hurricane Irene.)

SUMMERSTAGE BENEFIT: LYKKE LI

We caught Swedish sensation Li Lykke Timotej Zachrisson lighting up Webster Hall back in May, returning to New York City to celebrate the release of her long-awaited second album, Wounded Rhymes. An intoxicating blend of Stevie Nicks and Sinead O’Connor, the twenty-five-year-old Li and her band were all dressed in black, Li in a shawl covering a bodysuit, her hair tightly pulled back like one of Robert Palmer’s backup singers. On a stage with long black strips of filmy cloth hanging from the ceiling, smoke machines pouring out cloudy mists, and lights continually flashing, Li put on a dazzling seventy-five-minute set that included songs from Rhymes, 2008’s Youth Novels, and such singles as “Possibility,” from the New Moon soundtrack, music steeped in synthesizers and percussion. She played autoharp on the lovely “I Know Places” and added her own percussion to “Rich Kid Blues.” Although far from a melancholic evening, many of her songs deal with loneliness and heartbreak; “Sadness is a blessing / Sadness is a pearl / Sadness is my boyfriend / Oh, sadness, I’m your girl,” she opines on “Sadness Is a Blessing,” and in “Unrequited Love” she wails, “Oh my love, I’ve been denied it / Oh my love is unrequited.” But long before she tore into the set-closing “Get Some,” from the new record, she had the crowd wrapped around her finger like a lonely lover’s charm. Li is back in town on Monday night, August 1, playing a sold-out benefit show at SummerStage, with Montreal trio Timbre Timbre, touring behind its latest release, Creep on Creepin’ On.

JOHN LENNON 70th BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION

New York City will be celebrating what would have been John Lennon’s seventieth birthday with a plethora of events this week (photo © Bob Gruen)

October 6-9 (and beyond)

It’s hard to believe that in December it’ll be thirty years since John Lennon was murdered by Mark David Chapman in front of the Dakota on Central Park West. On October 9, the cool Beatle, who had fallen in love with his adopted home of New York, would have turned seventy years old. The city will be celebrating that never-reached milestone with a series of events all over town this week. Starting today and running through December 31, the Paley Center will be presenting “This Boy . . . John Lennon in Liverpool,” comprising rare photographs from John’s early years. On Thursday night at 7:00, the Paley Center will screen the American Masters film LennonNYC (Michael Epstein, 2010) as part of DocFest 2010, followed by a panel discussion with Epstein, Susan Lacy, Dick Cavett, and Dennis Elsas. In addition, the Paley Center has scheduled showings of IMAGINE: JOHN LENNON, WHAT’S HAPPENING! THE BEATLES IN THE U.S.A., THE U.S. VS. JOHN LENNON, and GIMME SOME TRUTH: THE MAKING OF JOHN LENNON’S IMAGINE ALBUM through the end of the year. On October 9, City Winery will be celebrating with “A John Lennon 70th Birthday Party,” featuring a VIP dinner and “Imagine Wine Flight” and performances by Kimya Dawson, Anais Mitchell, Freedy Johnston, Jesse Malin, the Chapin Sisters, Lisa Bouchelle, the Kennedys, and Tony Scherr; proceeds benefit the Food Bank of New York City. Also on October 9, LennonNYC will be screened for free at Central Park SummerStage at 7:00 (but you better get there a lot earlier). And finally, at the Morrison Hotel Gallery on Bowery, Julian Lennon’s photographs are being displayed for the first time, through October 10. Happy birthday, John!

Back in late June, the Stanley Clarke Band, joined by Japanese pianist wunderkind Hiromi, played an inspiring free show at SummerStage as part of the Carefusion Jazz Festival, with legendary promoter George Wein in attendance. Clarke was in great spirits, wandering across the stage from keyboardist Ruslan Sirota to drummer Ronald Bruner Jr. to Hiromi, part fan, part orchestra leader. Clarke moved from electric to stand-up bass effortlessly, playing the fusion that has made him one of the jazz world’s best for four decades. As on that beautiful night in Central Park (which was opened by the amazing McCoy Tyner), the quartet will be featuring songs from their latest album, simply titled THE STANLEY CLARKE BAND (Heads Up, June 2010), which includes such tracks as “Soldier,” “Fulani,” “Labyrinth,” and “How Is the Weather Up There?” The record also contains the superbly titled “Larry Has Traveled 11 Miles and Waited a Lifetime for the Return of Vishnu’s Report” and a horn-laden tribute to Sonny Rollins on the occasion of the saxophone colossus’s eightieth birthday. Clarke and his band will be at the Blue Note for twelve shows over six nights from September 28 through October 3, offering plenty of opportunities to catch this terrific group, sounding as good as ever.
