Spa Week in New York City can seem overwhelming, as dozens of spas around town offer all kinds of $50 specials on treatments. How to choose? One hidden highlight: The Back Room Hand & Foot Spa in Harlem, a flagship store of the popular Carol’s Daughter product line. The Back Room features fantastic manicures and pedicures using Carol’s Daughter signature natural products and also offers the option of choosing Ginger + Liz polishes in the most “where did you get that?! I have to try it!” shades, which are also great for the nails — they’re toxin-free and vegan. Try the super pampering and impeccable expertise of the Back Room with one of their Spa Week $50 specials: Choose either the Orange Ambrosia Blood Orange Ritual, which includes a pedi peel and ten-minute foot or hand massage, or the Almond Cookie Sweet Almond Treat, consisting of a pedi peel and four-ounce almond cookie shea soufflé. There’s still a few more days left in Spa Week, which continues through the weekend until Sunday, so if you’ve been busy with that old Monday to Friday nine to five, now’s the time to destress. The Australian skin, bath, and bodycare line Jurlique has long been a favorite for exceptional natural beauty. Jurlique really is quite different; the owners have their own Jurlique farm in Australia, where they grow thirty-five of their own special ingredients, including lavender and rose, used in their cult favorite rosewater and creams. The line also includes citrus and jasmine, sourced with scrupulous attention to quality. During Spa Week, forty-five-minute versions of their revitalizing fruit enzyme peel and purely age-defying facials are available. Those with strong sensitivity to odor beware; Jurlique’s natural products have beautiful but strong scents. For a more basic approach, try an old favorite, Dyanna Body and Nail Spa. The upscale salon is offering a sybaritic combo: a ninety-minute jelly pedicure with paraffin plus a Brazilian manicure with ten minutes of reflexology for only fifty bucks is quite a deal.

Spa Week, the twice-yearly festival in which spas offer two or three of their services at a special $50 rate, is now nationwide, with spas and sybarites in more than 10 states celebrating from October 11 to 17. But with more than 120 participating spots in Manhattan alone and now a dozen more in Brooklyn, New York City should be its capital. From quiet neighborhood favorites like Serenity Spa on the Upper East Side to laser medispa chains to the big names like Perricone and Trish McEvoy, Spa Week in New York City means being spoiled for choice. Among the offerings, we’re happy to once again spotlight the special seasonal facial at L’Institut Sothys New York; the winter detoxifying vanilla and warming caramel are the ingredients at this sleek New York outpost of the highly esteemed Parisian salon, and the wonderful Rose offers excellent manicures and pedicures at regular rates. It’s exciting to see the Sphatika Experience Spa on the menu: Among the most innovative and unusual spas in Manhattan, Sphatika offers a choice of three $50 facials, one of which includes their far infrared sauna treatment. Sphatika offers a very unusual suite of restorative mind, body, and spirit treatments including detoxifying skin brushing, a steam canopy, and natural quartz crystal skin care. And downtowners can rejoice: Deva Spa, part of the beloved Devachan hair salon, has head-to-toe offerings: a skin-brightening body exfoliation, an express facial and manicure, or an hour-plus deluxe pedicure, each with natural and organic ingredients. Be sure to check out the nearly overwhelming list of spas and salons online; you’ll need to join the SpaWeek mailing list to see them, but it’s free and easy to manage.

SPA WEEK 2010

L'Institut Sothys New York in Midtown will be offering a trio of $50 specials during Spa Week

L’Institut Sothys in Midtown is one of more than two hundred area spas offering $50 specials during Spa Week

Through April 18, $50 per treatment

Spa Week is an annual festival of $50 facials, massages, manicures, pedicures, and other health and beauty treatments designed to spread knowledge about spas to a broader range of people. Since its inception in 2004, the event has booked more than 350,000 customers across the country, allowing average Americans to sample cutting-edge clinical skin and body therapies such as photo (light-based) facials and microdermabrasion as well as good old-fashioned pampering. The special $50 spots, which can regularly run from $75 to $500, sell out early, so find the one you want fast and make your reservation. The promotion features more than two hundred spas, most in Manhattan but also in Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island, and Westchester. Among the ritziest is Caudalie Vinispa at the Plaza Hotel, one of fewer than half a dozen outposts of this groundbreaking French skincare line; using the active ingredient in grapes, reservatrol, the spa will be offering such treatments as the Vinitherapie facial and pedicure. For water rather than wine, the downtown Great Jones Spa on Great Jones Street can’t be beat; all three of their Spa Week treatments, including bikini wax, mani/pedi, and blowout, include passes to the sumptuous Water Lounge. On 57th St. and Sixth Ave., the American flagship of the venerable French L’Institut Sothys is featuring forty-five-minute massages, bikini waxes, and their signature seasonal facial. Every season Sothys changes the natural ingredients in their skin treatments: this spring is the raspberry and rhubarb facial, chosen for the fruit-and-vegetable combo’s skin-healing and rejuvenating benefits, not just their tasty tastes and scents. Exhale Spa, with locations on Central Park South, in the Meatpacking District, and on the Upper East Side, offers their usual slate of mind/body wellness activities, including yoga classes with well-known teachers Susan Orem and Dana Strong; for Spa Week they are offering full-length hour-long fusion massages and true facials. But that’s only the tip of the iceberg; log on to the official Spa Week website to choose from among the many unusual treatments available.
