Building on more than a decade of success, Spa Week is back for its annual spring event, with hundreds of spas offering top-of-the-line full-length health, wellness, and beauty treatments, including massages and facials, manicures and pedicures, microdermabrasion, peels, waxing, laser hair removal, and more, for $50 each, for one week only. Appointments go fast; booking starts today, March 20, online, and nailing the best times and treatments means signing up on spaweek.com and reserving services now. This year sees the return of favorites Essential Therapy, Skin Spa, L’Institute Sothys, GemVie, and Serene Max — all of which twi-ny has personally tried — as well as new services like Smooth Synergy’s Fanny Facial, for, that’s right, the tuches. A sculpting treatment that starts with an exfoliating scrub and then zaps the butt and upper thighs with microcurrents to tone and lift, the facial gives new meaning to “smooth as a baby’s . . .” Men aren’t left out; KUR Skin Lab offers the Bearded Boss Men’s Facial, while sensitive folks might want to try the organic, vegan, and allergen-free treatments from VMV Hypoallergenics and the Organic Pharmacy. NOTE: It’s important to remember not to schedule a treatment via the spa’s website; you must register on the official Spa Week site (a matter of entering your email address) and book from there in order to receive the special deals.

Spa Week continues through Sunday, so New Yorkers still have the opportunity to try one of hundreds of full-length health, wellness, and beauty treatments, including massages and facials, manicures and pedicures, microdermabrasion, peels, waxing, laser hair removal, cellulite reduction, and more, for $50. The appointments went faster than ever this year, but there are still spas offering deals on spaweek.com, including an oat milk facial, enzyme peel, or massage at KUR Skin Lab; Skin Spa’s wonderful OxyTrio face treatment, which twi-ny enjoyed last year; and perennial favorite Essential Therapy’s two massage options (deep tissue or Swedish) or blueberry detox facial. And if there are any spots left, grab one of newcomer Q Flatiron’s Infinity Float sessions, a revolutionary experience in which participants enter their own private cabanalike changing room complete with an Infinity Float pool, then lie down to remain suspended in warm ten-inch-deep water infused with a thousand pounds of Epsom salts for up to an hour. Floaters can regulate the light inside their spacious pods (mini-rooms, really; one can stand up in them), but the best experience comes with the lights off, after ten minutes of relaxing music ends, in silence, resting in perfect balance, senses blissfully at rest. (NOTE: It’s important to remember not to schedule a treatment via the spa’s website; you must register on the official Spa Week site and book from there in order to receive the special deals.)

Spa Week has been one of our favorite events for more than ten years; twice a year, spring and fall, hundreds of spas provide an enormous array of top-of-the-line full-length health, wellness, and beauty treatments, including massages and facials, manicures and pedicures, microdermabrasion, peels, waxing, laser hair removal, cellulite reduction, and more, for $50 each, for one week only. The appointments go fast; would-be hedonists need to sign up on spaweek.com online and book ahead of time. Every year spas offer new technologies and techniques, from LED photofacials and acupuncture to organic, vegan, and allergen-free treatments; spring 2016, taking place April 11-17, focuses on health and wellness in the face of technology. We may love ordering organic smoothies, booking spin and yoga classes, and counting steps on smartphones and tablets, but constant electronic connection and input takes its toll on mind and body in back and neck pain, anxiety, and facial tension. To reverse the damage from technology overload, this year spas have created treatments that specifically focus on relieving muscular and energetic stress, such as the Office Relief Massage at KUR Skin Lab, which includes a guided meditation to address subconscious tension, and the Short Geek Massage at Haven Spa, for neck, back, and shoulder tightness from mouse, keyboard, and screen time, plus the groundbreaking Infinity Float at Q Flatiron, which features an hour disconnected from everything in a totally private spacious float tank. Returning favorites include the Cherry and Gooseberry Seasonal Spring Facial at L’institut Sothys, the super-effective OxyTrio Face Treatment at one of Skin Spa’s six New York City locations, and GemVie’s high-tech Dermaplaning and Turbo Microcurrent, Dermalift, or Microdermabrasion for Face and Décolleté treatments. NOTE: It’s important to remember not to schedule a treatment via the spa’s website; you must register on the official Spa Week site (a matter of entering your email address) and book from there in order to receive the special deals.

It’s time to start making appointments for Spa Week; through the middle of next month, dozens of salons, spas, and studios throughout the metropolitan area will be booking selected services at the very special rate of $50 each. As Spa Week veterans, we are happy to say that this year the deals are outstanding, particularly the amazing skin care. We have to rave about the skin care at the Skin Spa Flatiron/Chelsea, where we tried a customized facial with microcurrent add-on. The NuFace microcurrent technology firmed and plumped our sun-dry post-summer skin like no other; it was not only painless but also effective for days afterward. Another standout is GemVie Medical Spa in Murray Hill; they’re offering a Medical Grade Chemical Peel, which we can vouch for, a Deep Pore Detox Facial, and Dermaplaning followed by an Algo Mask to remove evidence of summer sun abuse. Returning favorites all over town include Essential Therapy and L’Institut Sothys, but with seven Skin Spa locations around Manhattan, from Midtown West to Soho, we just might go get microcurrent-zapped again in October and be well satisfied.

SPA WEEK: SPRING 2013

Exhale

Exhale is offering exciting specials during Spa Week

Spring may feel late in coming to New York this year, but Spa Week (April 15-21) returns right on time with a wide-ranging sampling of $50 spa treatments. We’ve long been a fan of this change to try new treatments or indulge in an old favorite at a great price. From fitness and facials at a modern chic hotel to classic French treatments on 57th St. to small, spotless and discreet Park Ave. area spas, here are some of our favorites.

L’Institut Sothys New York
37 West 57th St.
212-688-9400
www.sothyspa.com

The oh-so-French upscale Parisian staple Sothys opens its doors to Spa Week customers with a choice of a signature massage or a classic European facial, both 50 minutes. It’s the sort of place that makes us think of the salon where Catherine Deneuve works in the Roman Polanski classic Repulsion — it’s that French and that stately.

exhale — Gramercy
Gansevoort Park Avenue NYC
420 Park Ave. South
646-380-5330
www.exhalespa.com

Exhale’s cult is built around its Core Fusion classes, incorporating Lotte Berk-like body sculpting moves with barre and modern fitness moves to make the ladies of midtown, uptown, Murray Hill, and Gramercy work their core, and work it hard. Spa Week offers a fantastic deal for new students: $50 for a 5-pack of Core Fusion and Yoga classes (usually $315 for a 10-pack or $37/single class). Spa services for Spa Week include a Sircuit Smart Facial Peel or a Pure Manicure/Pedicure package with Ginger-Infused Lotion, Organic Lavender Foot Scrub Exfoliation, and Smoothing Organic Heel Balm. The exhale Gramercy location, a small, glass-walled room looking down on Park Ave., is a gem but fills up fast; buy a 5-pack and book your classes early.

Serene Max Laser Spa
24 East 36th St.
212-213-3003
www.serenemax.com

Tucked away behind a small door just off Madison Ave., Serene Max is serene indeed: a quiet, smart, clean, and surprisingly spacious salon and spa that offers some of the most approachably priced and effective laser hair removal in the area. We’ve tried their $50 special, offering two laser sessions for chin, lip, ears, hand, and fingers, or feet and toes, and were very pleased. Other $50 Spa Week offerings include a Laser Focus facial for age and sun spots or a single, longer laser hair removal session for larger areas, such as face, neck, underarms, bikini (regular or Brazilian), half arm or half leg, chest, stomach, shoulders, lower back, or buttocks. As with any laser treatment, multiple visits are necessary to eradicate hair that grows out at different time intervals, but the expert specialist we tried, Dayna, was precise and clear about how many sessions were necessary, neither overselling nor underestimating what additional sessions were needed.

SPA WEEK: SPRING 2012

The upscale Exhale will offer $50 facials, mani/pedis, and mind/body classes during Spa Week

Multiple locations
All treatments: $50
www.spaweek.com

We love Spa Week. Over the years we have been massaged, pedicured, hair-styled, exercised, and pampered at fabulous (and usually expensive) studios and spas throughout New York City for amazing prices. Spa Week is all about making services available and affordable for us regular New Yorkers twice a year, spring and fall. Spa Week appointments have been booking out faster every year; this year twi-ny is pleased to report that the SpaWeek.com site has opened early, but you still better hurry to make your reservation. Participants can register now for free and choose from among a dizzying array of treatments for Spa Week 2012, which runs April 16-22. Among the $50 services offered by nearly one hundred spas spread out across four boroughs, Westchester, Long Island, and other areas are therapeutic full-body massages and aromatic well-being facials at the Salon & Spa at Saks Fifth Avenue, peppermint mani/pedis and full-body scrub with chamomile and marine wraps at Dyanna Body Nail Salon, laser hair removal at Completely Bare and Skintology, orange and grapefruit citrus facial treatments at L’Institut Sothys, acupuncture for pain management at Green Tea Massage and Spa, five-packs of mind/body classes at the classy Exhale Mind/Body Spas, eyelash extensions at Albina’Spa, and a package of Gharshana silk gloves exfoliation, Abhyanga massage, and Shirodhra head and foot massage at Fine Living New York Ayurveda. We haven’t tried the last two items yet, but they’re high on our list. Most places also accept Spa Week gift cards, so they make a pretty decent present as well.

SPA WEEK

Devachan Salon is one of more than a hundred participants offering special $50 treatments during Spa Week

Multiple locations
October 10-16, treatments $50
www.spaweek.com

It’s Spa Week again, and that means dozens of salons, spas, and studios throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, Long Island, Westchester, and other metropolitan areas are offering two or three selected services at the very special rate of $50 each. In New York City, with mani/pedis topping $75, massages at $125 and up, and facials starting around $95, Spa Week’s $50 deals are very good indeed. The deals are also a great low-cost, low-risk way to sample a spa or service you’ve always been curious about but never wanted to pay three figures to try, like the VelaShaping at one of American Laser Skincare’s several locations. VelaShaping is an exciting laser-based noninvasive treatment to reduce cellulite and slim one’s figure — and it’s FDA-approved. American Laser also offers Skin Tightening laser services and Foto Facials (light-based therapy) for $50 during Spa Week. If organic is more your style than high-tech lasers, the beloved SoHo favorite Deva Spa, part of Devachan Salon, offers 45-minute express facials, full body exfoliations, or a mani/pedi combo with certified organic ingredients to refresh the mind, body, soul — and skin. If you’d rather be active than lie down and be stroked, get to Exhale MindBody Spa, which has opened a new location in midtown east at the Gansevoort Park Avenue, and choose a five-pack of their signature Core Fusion and Yoga classes for $50. If you need a rest after that, Exhale offers two other services for Spa Week: a Smart Facial Peel tailored to your skin type and a Pure Manicure/Pedicure package with soothing organic ingredients.
