The fall edition of Mad. Sq. Eats is up and running in the pedestrian plaza known as Worth Square at the intersection of Broadway and Fifth Ave. at 24th St., where more than two dozen gourmet vendors are serving culinary delights through October 3. People flock to the area, just outside of Madison Square Park, to amass their own international multicourse tasting menu. Among the many tantalizing options are oysters from Brooklyn Oyster Party, chili salted shrimp from Hong Kong Street Cart, fish tacos from Calexico, a personal pizza from Roberta’s, bulgogi burgers from Asiadog, truffled mozzarella crepes and fries from Bar Suzette, gluten-free dishes from Two Tablespoons, charcuterie from Charlito’s Cocina, the pressed chicken sandwich and Phoenician fries from ililli, empanadas from La Sonrísa, the short rib brisket sandwich from Mayhem & Stout, mini rice balls from Arancini Bros., the lobster BLT from Red Hook Lobster Pound, Tostilocos from Mexicue, Frenchman Street Creole gumbo from the Gumbo Bros., and meatball sliders with Not Your Average Brown Sauce and Gorgonzola cheese from Mighty Balls, in addition to culinary fare and flair from Pig and Khao, the Cannibal, Turan, Breads Bakery, Lunch Box by Takumi, and Seoul Lee Korean BBQ. And then comes dessert, which features ice-cream-cookie sandwiches from Melt, corn-flake and compost cookies from Momofuku Milk Bar, truffles from Nunu Chocolates, truffle-cheddar pretzels from Sigmund’s, cannoli from Stuffed Artisan Cannolis, apple cider donuts from Doughnuttery, and the splendid macarons from Macaroun Parlor. To enhance your visit, plan on going during one of the free Saturday afternoon Mad. Sq. Music concerts in the park from 3:00 to 5:00; Suzy Bogguss and Miss Tess & the Talkbacks perform on September 13, Aoife O’Donovan and Cahalen Morrison & Eli West on September 20, and Julian Lage & Chris Eldridge and Front Country on September 27. (Dom Clemons and the Brain Cloud take the stage on October 4.) And on September 18, Mad. Sq. We are absolute suckers for the spate of trendy food courts popping around the city, from the indoor Todd English Food Hall at the Plaza and the brand-new Hudson Eats in the World Financial Center to the pop-up Mad. Sq. Eats by Madison Square Park and Smorgasburg in Brooklyn. You can also catch us now at Broadway Bites, which continues through August 1 in Greeley Square Park by Macy’s. More than thirty vendors are selling their edibles; you can start with a pastry and a cup of joe from Breads Bakery, then move on to a slice of pizza from Roberta’s, a bulgogi burger from Asiadog, a rice ball from Arancini Bros., barbecue from Mason Jar NYC, takoyaki teriyaki balls from Mimi & Coco NY, a variety of meatballs from Mighty Balls, gluten-free veggie fare from Two Tablespoons, or a burger and truffle fries from Bar Suzette. There’s also California street food from Jicama NYC, Asian street food from Hong Kong Street Cart, Indian from Chutney, Thai from Bangkok Bar, Colombian from Palenque, Korean from Seoul Lee Korean Barbecue, Turkish from MMM Enfes, Mexican from Mexicue, cured meats from Charlito’s Cocina, empanadas from La Sonrisa Empanadas, sandwiches and beer from Mayhem & Stout, Brazilian cuisine from Carnaval, healthy Japanese fusion from Onigiri by Tampopo, and tacos from Brooklyn Taco Co. For dessert, our favorite is Macaron Parlour, but you can also try delights from Stuffed Artisan Cannolis, Nunu Beers & Scoops, La Newyorkina, Gelato Ti Amo, and Melt Bakery. As with Mad. Sq. Eats, it’s worth making a trip to this outdoor food court, not just stop by if you happen to be in the area or are going to or coming from Macy’s, Penn Station, or Madison Square Garden. In addition, we recommend taking your food just a few blocks north on Broadway and find a table amid Chakaia Booker’s public art installation, “The Sentinels,” a collection of sculptures made from tires and tubing.

Chili has a fabulous way of repeating on you, and this weekend the NYChiliFest will do just that in a big way at Chelsea Market. On Sunday, January 26, chefs from more than two dozen local eateries and food trucks will take part in a chili cook-off, including Cannibal, Mile End, Num Pang, Jeepney, Bubby’s, Jimmy’s No. 43, Roberta’s, Pies ‘n’ Thighs, Los Tacos 1, Morris Grilled Cheese, and Mexicue, going after the coveted Golden Chili Mug. Their fare will be judged by Umami Burger’s Adam Fleischman, Wrighteous Organics’ Martin Tessarzik, Catherine Lederer of Chop’t, and chefs Amanda Freitag and Heather Carlucci, along with multitudes of chili fanatics who, for a mere fifty bucks, can enjoy unlimited meaty, spicy delights throughout the eight-hundred-foot-long concourse — and can wash it all down with four varieties of Samuel Adams beer for only five dollars more. The primary ingredient in the dishes, one-hundred-percent dry-aged, locally raised beef, is supplied by Chelsea Market’s own Dickson’s Farmstand Meats. In addition, there will be live music by the honky-tonk band the Dixons and street-singing legend Super Bad Brad.

As if the Macy’s Herald Square area isn’t already crowded enough with Thanksgiving approaching and the holiday shopping season moving into full gear ridiculously early, now there’s another reason to head to the Midtown hotspot. Urban Space, the company that finds unique indoor and outdoor specialty market opportunities for retailers and in the past has developed such popular outlets as Mad. Sq. Eats, the Union Square Holiday Market, the Dekalb Market, and others, is now operating Broadway Bites, a culinary mecca in Greeley Square Park. John Quincy Adams Ward’s statue of abolitionist, social reformer, political activist, newspaper editor, and presidential candidate Horace Greeley overlooks thirty food stations that offer international food and drink daily from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm through November 24. You can start with Bantam Bagels’ cream-cheese-infused dough balls and a cup of joe from Gorilla Coffee, then move on to a slice of pizza from Roberta’s, a lobster roll from Red Hook Lobster Pound, a bulgogi burger from Asiadog, a rice ball from Arancini Bros., barbecue from Mason Jar NYC, takoyaki teriyaki balls from Mimi & Coco NY, a variety of meatballs from Mighty Balls, or gluten-free veggie fare from Two Tablespoons and healthy shakes from SoBar. There’s also California street food from Jicama NYC, Indian from Chutney, Thai from Bangkok Bar, Korean from Seoul Lee Korean Barbecue, Turkish from MMM Enfes, Mexican from Mexicue, cured meats from Charlito’s Cocina, sausage and beer from Dorrian’s Winter Garden, creative sliders from Slide, sandwiches and beer from the Cannibal and Mayhem & Stout, grilled cheeses from Mrs. Dorsey’s Kitchen, and sweet and savory crepes from Bar Suzette. For dessert, our favorite is Macaron Parlour, but you can also try Stuffed Artisan Cannolis, Nunu Chocolates, Doughnuttery, Sigmund’s Pretzels, and miniature Dutch pancakes from the Poffertjes Man. As with Mad. Sq. Eats, it’s worth making a trip to this outdoor food court, not just stop by if you happen to be in the area or are going to or coming from Macy’s, Penn Station, or Madison Square Garden.
