This year’s pride festivities honor the fiftieth anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, which set the Gay Pride movement in motion in full force. There are some new parties, while the March itself has changed its route, so pay close attention to the locations listed below. As always, the ticketed events and VIP treatment are selling out fast, so you better act quickly if you want to shake it up at some pretty crazy gatherings.

Last year’s NYC Pride celebration was giddy with delight because of the Supreme Court’s decision to make same-sex marriage legal throughout America. Things are expected to take a more somber yet angry tone this year in reaction to the horrific mass shooting in Orlando. In a letter posted on its website, NYC Pride co-chairs Maryanne Roberto Fine and David Studinski explain, “Some folks have asked if any of our events will be canceled for safety reasons. All events will continue to go on as scheduled. The reason for this is simple: we must never let those who wish to silence us win.” As always, the ticketed events are selling out fast, so you better act quickly if you want to shake your groove thang at some pretty crazy parties.

The forty-fifth anniversary of the Stonewall Riots will be commemorated during NYC Pride Week, with events honoring the ongoing fight for LGBTQ rights scheduled from Tuesday through Sunday. The celebration begins with a free family screening of The Wizard of Oz on Tuesday night in Hudson River Park and continues with such annual traditions as the Rally, PrideFest, the March, and Dance on the Pier. The ticketed events are selling out fast, so you better act quickly if you want to shake your groove thang at some pretty crazy parties. The host organization is Heritage of Pride, which “works toward a future without discrimination where all people have equal rights under the law.”

As more and more states pass same-sex marriage bills, especially now that DOMA has been defeated, there is more and more to celebrate at annual gay pride festivities, although there is of course still a long way to go until there is full equality nationwide. The party begins June 28 at 7:00 with the Rally (free) in Hudson River Park’s Pier 26, hosted by Pandora Boxx and Keith Price and featuring performances by Pam Ann, Nhoji, Vicci Martinez, Shawnee She King, Alexis Houston, JLine, Kit Yan, Jessica Halem, Sassfrass Lowrey, Ryan Amador, the NYC Gay Men’s Chorus, Teresa Genecco & Her Little Big Band, and the Imperial Court of New York, with speeches by Rev. Mark Erson, Carl Siciliano, Jacob Rudolph, Danny Garvin, and Janice Thom. The next day, the VIP Rooftop Party ($35-$500) takes place on Hudson Terrace from 2:00 to 10:00, with DJs Serving Ovahness, Marco Da Silva, and Frankie Knuckles, running side by side with the tenth anniversary of the official women’s event Rapture on the River ($25-$1,000) on Pier 26, with DJs Dimples and Whitney Day. On Sunday at 12 noon, the March (free) gets under way, moving from Fifth Ave. & Thirty-Sixth St. down to Christopher & Greenwich Sts., led by grand marshals Edie Windsor, Earl Fowlkes, and Harry Belafonte; among the awards being given out are Best Use of Theme, Best Marching Contingent, Best Decorated Vehicle, Best Musical Contingent, and Most Original. Also on Sunday, the LGBT street fair PrideFest (free) runs from 11:00 to 6:00 on Hudson St., with live performances by Rhythm Locura, Victoria Chase, Lady M., Ladyboi, Tania Marissa, Kelly King, Christine Martucci, and others, while the sold-out Dance on the Pier ($45-$1,250) gets hot and heavy on Pier 26 and people cool off at the new event Pride {Poolside} ($35-$500) presented by Hed Kandi at Hotel Americano in Chelsea.

Expect massive celebrations of the passage of the same-sex marriage bill during this year’s annual gay pride weekend. Things hit their stride on Saturday, beginning with the NYC Dyke March at 5:00 at Bryant Park, followed by the VIP Rooftop Party at Hudson Terrace ($45), which boasts three floors of dancing with spectacular views of the city, and the ever-popular Rapture on the River ($25-$75), which is moving to Pier 57 and features a live performance by Hunter Valentine. The LGBT street fair Pridefest takes place on Hudson St. between Abingdon St. & West Fourteenth St., featuring lots of vendors, a kids space, and performances by the cast of Wicked, Jessica Betts, Shiragirl, Billy Winn, Robin Cloud, Christine Martucci, Amdias, Beleke, Soneboy, the Glamazons, and others. On Sunday, the March will head from Thirty-sixth & Fifth to Christopher & Greenwich, led by grand marshals Cyndi Lauper, Chris Salgardo, Phyllis Siegel, and Connie Kopelov, with awards given out for Best Use of Theme, Most Original, Best Marching Contingent, Best Decorated Vehicle, and Best Musical Contingent. Following the March, the party continues on Pier 57 for the wild and crazy Dance on the Pier ($90-$165), with DJs Eddie Baez, the Perry Twins, and Boris and live performances by Eva Simons, Lauper, and others.
