We fell in love with Malaysian food after spending a week in Bali and Singapore about ten years ago, delighting in its unusual mix of flavors and unexpected combinations. You can try such signature dishes as Hainanese chicken rice, char kway teow, teh tarik, mee goreng, laksa, ais kacang, nasi lemak, and murtabak during the second annual Malaysian Restaurant Week, which runs June 13-19, offering traditional dishes at Malaysian eateries as well as Malaysian specialties at other Asian establishments. There will be $20.11 meals available at more than two dozen restaurants in Manhattan, Queens, Connecticut, and New Jersey, including Laut, Sentosa, Penang, New Malaysia, Nyonya, Char Koon 1800, Forbidden City Bistro, and Fatty Crab and other specials at such restaurants as Sho Shaun Hergatt, Double Crown, and Stanton Social.

For the next three weeks, there’s no need to wait on those crazy long lines at Shack Shack if you want to get some fine food in Madison Square Park. The Food Square at Mad. Sq. Mark’t is back for its second year, featuring good eatin’ from more than a dozen specialty booths. You can get a bacon-scallion or truffle-cheddar pretzel from Sigmund, a chorizo taco or Fatty heritage pork and XO sausage dog from Cabrito / Fatty Crab / Fatty ’Cue, a zaatar cheese markook and fried cauliflower from Ilili, an egg and truffle sandwich from Piccolo Café, freshly fired pizza from Roberta’s, a thick-sliced pastrami sandwich on an onion roll from Almond, a chicken biscuit from Pies ‘n’ Thighs, or a gourmet sweet or savory crepe with crispy frites from Bar Suzette. Follow that up with Italian pastry from Stuffed Artisan Cannolis, a chocolate and nutella waffle from Wafels & Dinges, a ginger molasses cookie from Pies ‘n’ Thighs, a chocolate-chip, peanut butter, and pretzel-chunk cookie from Sigmund, apple cider donuts from Breezy Hill Orchard, or other delectable delights. The market, which also includes more than a dozen shops, is open daily from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm on the pedestrian median at the intersection of Fifth Ave. & Broadway at 25th St.

Sunday, November 1, is your last chance to stop by Food Square at Madison Square Park, which does not offer the usual kind of food stands found at street festivals across the city. Instead, you’ll find booths from Hill Country Barbecue, Suzette, Viking Danish Cuisine, Wafels & Dinges, Breezy Hill Orchard, and Fatty Crab and its sister, Cabrito. We particularly recommend a savory crepe and thin, crispy frites served up by Troy and Peter at Suzette; their gourmet food might not be cheap  (our chicken truffle sausage and fontina cheese crepe with a side of fries ran $15), but it’s mighty good. And BBQ lovers can get hungry by watching a whole pig being roasted on a spit, being prepared for pork buns, sliders, and fatty dogs. While some of the stands will show up at various holiday fairs in Bryant Park, Union Square Park, and Columbus Circle opening in a few weeks, others won’t, so check them out while you can.
