“My first taste memory is pickle,” Padma Lakshmi told the Guardian in 2004. “Even as a kid, I was really weird. I used to climb up the shelves in my grandmother’s pantry. The pickle jar was kept right at the top. One time, I dropped the jar and it broke. I was totally busted.” You won’t have to worry about getting busted for your pickle obsession at the annual Lower East Side Pickle Day, being held Sunday on Orchard St. between Houston and Delancey. Among those participating in the festivities, which include food, fashion, and family-friendly games and activities, are pickled purveyors Guss’ Pickles, Pickle Me Pete, Backyard Brine, Grillo’s Pickles, Crisp Pickles, the Pickle Guys, Rick’s Picks, Horman’s Best Pickles, Adamah Farm, Brooklyn Brine, MacDonald Farms, Epic Pickles, Brine Brothers, City Saucery, Brooklyn Whatever, Kilhaney’s Pickles, Anomaly Season, Messy Brine, and Farm Ferments in addition to Melt Bakery, Ice & Vice, Que Chevere, Nom Wah Tea Parlor, Heros & Villains, Macaron Parlour, the SKINny Bar & Lounge, DACHA Live Cultured Veggies, Renegade Lemonade, and Roni-Sue’s Chocolates, among others. There will also be live music, the Pickling Poet, and a home pickling contest. Pickles have a long affiliation with the Lower East Side, and the annual Pickle Day only adds to that pickled history.

Speaking about Calvin Coolidge, Alice Roosevelt Longworth said, “He looks as though he’s been weaned on a pickle.” For many of us who were born and raised in New York, we’re not sure why that was an insult. And that’s why on Sunday you’re likely to find us at the annual Lower East Side Pickle Day, being held on Orchard St. between Houston and Delancey. Among those participating in the festivities, which include food, fashion, and family-friendly games and activities, are pickled purveyors Guss’ Pickles, Pioneer Cannery, Macdonald Farms, Pickle Me Pete, Backyard Brine, Grillo’s Pickles, Crisp & Co. Ambrose Bierce once said that life is “a spiritual pickle preserving the body from decay.” That quote takes on a whole new meaning at the annual Lower East Side Pickle Day, being held on Sunday, October 4, on Orchard St. The afternoon festivities will include a Pickle Relay Race, the always popular Pickle Toss, the Pickle Pooch Parade and Contest, a Home Pickling Contest, Pin the Pickle (we’re not sure what on), a Brine Dunk Tank, bocce, face painting, a Pickle Photo Booth, and lots of pickle merch. The303 at Louie & Chan is presenting live performances by Kristin Lush at 12 noon, PJ at 1:00, SR Serge at 2:00, Nikodemus at 3:00, and Gil K at 4:00. Advertising itself with the deliciously cringeworthy phrase “It’s kind of a big dill,” Pickle Day returns to the Lower East Side on Sunday, October 19, promising its annual mix of food, fashion, and fun. Among the fifteen purveyors of pickled items will be McClure’s, Guss’, the Pickle Guys, Brooklyn Brine, Mrs. Kim’s Kimchi, and Sour Puss as well as more than two dozen other food vendors, including Georgia’s BBQ, Brooklyn Taco, Blue Ribbon Sushi Izakaya, Mimi and Coco, Melt Bakery, the Meatball Shop, Russ and Daughters, and Doughnut Plant. We’ve never really equated pickles with fashion, but at this festival you’ll also find clothing from Pull In, Yaf Sparkle, Fox and Jane, Grit N Glory, and Realife. Throughout the afternoon, music will be blasting from two stages, featuring Fantasy Grandma, Ellen Kaye and the Moscow 57 Band, Gil K, and DJs Hurrikeen, Bruce Tantum, and Kai Song, in addition to face painting, dancing, a home pickling contest, cat Bingo, a Pickle Day Pun-Off, a photo booth, workout demonstrations, a brine dunk tank, and animal adoptions.

More than forty pickled purveyors will be on hand for the tenth annual New York City International Pickle Day, including Pickle Guys, Zum Schneider, Russ and Daughters, McClure’s Pickles, Mother-in-Law’s Kimchi, Brooklyn Brine, Guss’ Pickles, Pickleña, Saxelby Cheesemongers, Kalustyan, Mama O’s Kimchi, La Barra Cevicheria, and Ronnie Sue’s Chocolates. A joint venture of the Lower East side Business Improvement District, the NY Food Museum — which dates pickling back to the ancient Mesopotamians more than four thousand years ago — and Grow NYC, the pickle-icious day will also feature a food and arts program curated by Umami. There should be plenty of free tastings, including some items you’d be surprised can be pickled.
