Science is under ever-more fire from those who believe it is just a collection of opinions and unproven theories, not fact-based analysis and understanding; the World Science Festival seeks to do something about that, “cultivating a general public informed by science, inspired by its wonder, convinced of its value, and prepared to engage with its implications for the future.” The seventh annual multidisciplinary festival takes place May 28 through June 1, with readings, lectures, performances, panel discussions, interactive displays, and much more, featuring such WSF stalwarts as cofounder Brian Greene and regular presenter Alan Alda. Among the topics being examined are family trees, ales and chocolate, quantum physics, time, poison, the human brain, the Higgs boson, DNA, and the Big Bang. Although some of the programs are already sold out, there might be tickets available at the door; in addition, there are plenty of free events that require no advance registration. Below are only some of the highlights.

MOVIES WITH A VIEW: WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder) offers the experience of a lifetime to young Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum) in classic family film

WILLY WONKA & THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (Mel Stuart, 1971)

www.brooklynbridgepark.org

Based on a 1964 Roald Dahl novel, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is a fanciful frolic through a children’s wonderland, filled with fear, trepidation, love, and lots of candy, both sweet and sour. Charlie Bucket (Peter Ostrum, in his only film appearance) lives with his dirt-poor family in a ramshackle room, where Grandpa Joe (Jack Albertson) can’t even get out of bed. But when goodhearted Charlie finds one of the golden tickets that will allow him to join a once-in-a-lifetime tour of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, Grandpa Joe is suddenly up and about, singing and dancing, and so will you be. Among the other kids with the golden tickets are the spoiled Veruca Salt (Julie Dawn Cole), the selfish Violet Beauregarde (Denise Nickerson), the tube-loving Mike Teevee (Paris Themmen), and the rather sloppy Augustus Gloop (Michael Bollner). Meanwhile, the creepy Mr. Slugworth (Günter Meisne) tries to lure the kids to the dark side as they slowly learn (well, some more than others) that there is more to life than just candy — and themselves. As they are ultimately led through this dreamland by the unpredictable Willy Wonka (Gene Wilder), they encounter chocolate rivers, bubble machines that make people float, and small Oompa Loompas who are quick to clean up any messes, of which there are several. The memorable soundtrack of this thoroughly entertaining, charming family film includes “The Candy Man Can,” “(I’ve Got a) Golden Ticket,” “Pure Imagination,” and, of course, “Oompa Loompa, Doompa-Dee-Do.” Directed by Mel Stuart, who passed away last August after a career that also included Wattstax, Four Days in November, and If It’s Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium, the film was remade by Tim Burton in 2005 starring Johnny Depp as Wonka with mixed results, but you can catch the original for free on July 25 as part of Brooklyn Bridge Park’s annual summer Movies with a View festival, with DJ Ayres kicking things off at 6:00, followed by a screening of Tony Donoghue’s short film Irish Folk Furniture.

Brooklyn-based Renegade Performance Group looks back to a terrible time 150 years ago in their site-specific piece Arteries of a Nation. Using sound and movement, RPG artistic director and choreographer André M. Zachery, composer Vincent Burwell, and writer Brook Stephenson examine three events that took place in July 1863: the Battle of Gettysburg, the New York City Draft Riots, and the attack of the all-black 54th Massachusetts Voluntary Infantry Regiment on Fort Wagner. The immersive work will be performed July 21 at 7:30 in Brooklyn Bridge Park, traveling from Squibb Playground to Pier 1, exploring such concepts as race and equality, still so central, and controversial in light of the Trayvon Martin case and the recent fight over the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The interactive piece, which also features the Bedford-Stuyvesant Restoration Youth Ensemble, takes on added significance by being held on the Brooklyn pier, which played a role in the draft riots and the Civil War.

SING FOR HOPE PIANOS

Multiple locations in all five boroughs
Through June 16, free
www.singforhope.org

You can tickle the ivories in some unusual places through June 16, as Sing for Hope Pianos dot the landscape of the city in both color and, of course, black and white. Founded in 2006 by Juilliard-trained sopranos Camille Zamora and Monica Yunus, Sing for Hope “activates artists as agents of transformation in underserved areas and promotes the ideal of art for all.” There are eighty-eight specially designed pianos across the five boroughs, in parks and public spaces where anyone can just take a seat and play, amateur or professional, first-timer or Carnegie Hall veteran. As opposed to three years ago, when all the pianos were designed by multidisciplinary British artist Luke Jerram for what he called “Play Me, I’m Yours,” this year’s pianos are by such artists as Paolo Pecchi (Central Park Tennis Center), Maxine Nienow (Times Square), Michael Scoggins (Little Red Square), Jennie Booth (Jackson Heights Post Office), William Raynolds (Soundview Park), Arianna Huffington and the Huffington Post Team (Thomas Jefferson Park), Stefan Sierhej (Brooklyn Bridge Park), Laura Ricciardi (South Street Seaport), Brenda Hyungyung Bae (Governors Island), Care Bonewitz (Grand Army Plaza), and Nina Allen (Old Stone House). You can read about each artist and piano on the official website, which also has a map so you can track down keyboards near wherever you are. Among the special events still to come are a Beaches and Barbeques party in Prospect Park’s Grand Army Plaza on June 8 at 2:00, a Trains, Boats, and Automobiles Tour at Brooklyn Bridge Park on June 8 at 4:00, a Manhattan Borough Tour meeting at Riverside Park’s Pier 1 on June 13 at 5:00, and the River View Photo Challenge at the Staten Island Ferry Terminal on June 14 at 4:00, among other local gatherings. At the end of the program, the pianos will be donated to public schools, health-care facilities, and community organizations.
