Over the years, music impresario Michael Dorf has staged an annual benefit concert celebrating the music of a major figure in the world of rock and roll; past honorees include Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, the Eagles, the Who, the Rolling Stones, R.E.M., and others. The 2013 fête takes place on March 7 at Carnegie Hall, when a fab lineup will play the music of His Most Purpleness, Prince. Born Prince Rogers Nelson in 1958, the Minneapolis artist formerly known as an unpronounceable glyph has been making great music for more than three decades, beginning with 1978’s For You and continuing with such other albums as Dirty Mind, Controversy, Purple Rain, Lovesexy, Emancipation, Xpectation, and 3121. He’s also been fighting the music industry itself, doing things his own way. In the past, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has been covered by the likes of Tom Jones, Warren Zevon, School of Fish, and Chaka Khan; at Carnegie Hall, the all-star lineup, joining house band the Roots, boasts such talent as Elvis Costello, Bettye LaVette, Talib Kweli, Sandra Bernhard, Booker T. Jones, the Waterboys, Citizen Cope & Alice Smith, D’Angelo, Blind Boys of Alabama, Bilal, Kat Edmonson, DeVotchKa, Nina Persson, Bhi Bhiman, fDeluxe, and Princess feat. Maya Rudolph & Gretchen Lieberum. The benefit will raise funds and awareness for GRAMMY in the Schools, Fixing Instruments for Kids in Schools, the Church Street School for Music & Art, the American Symphony Orchestra, Young Audiences New York, the Center for Arts Education, and Little Kids Rock.
