On January 16, 1919, the 18th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America, a document based on freedom, took away citizens’ rights to get plastered. The “manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors” was prohibited for thirteen years, until the passage of the 21st Amendment in 1933, which repealed the previous ban. So every December 5, non-teetotalers around the country pay tribute to that wise Congress with Repeal Day, not that they need yet another reason to tie one on in these hard times. One of the classiest celebrations will occur in Peacock Alley at the Waldorf=Astoria, where Frank Caiafa will re-create three old-time speakeasy-era cocktails and one new one just for this event (the Bagpiper, the First Class, the Middleton, and the Waldorf), along with appetizers and historical talks by Caiafa and Scotch Whiskey expert Kristina Sutter. Skol!
