With the weather hopefully getting better, Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market is beginning its third installment of the New York Gourmet Food Truck Bazaar on Sunday — it was supposed to kick off last week but got canceled because of the weather. Every second Sunday of the month through October, a handful of food trucks will join the market on Thirty-ninth St. between Ninth and Tenth Aves., serving a wide range of international delicacies. On April 29, you’ll be able to partake of a very good cheesesteak from Phil’s Steaks, awesome spicy rice cakes, kimchi arancini, and spicy seared-pork kim-cheesesteak from Kimchi Taco, excellent grass-fed burgers and Belgian-style double-fried frites from Frites ‘n’ Meats, lobster and shrimp rolls, a lobster BLT, and clam chowder from Red Hook Lobster Pound, and tangy citrus, spicy ginger, and green and black tea frozen drinks from Kelvin Natural Slush Co. All of that good food should give you energy to keep on shopping, checking out such places as A’s Collectibles, Athena Vintage Clothing, Bad Boys of 39th Street, the Boxmen, Kojo Volta Tribal Arts, Marlow’s Treasure Chest, Nen’s Tibet, Smuggler’s Cove, and many more.

PARKED! 2011

Saturday, August 20, free, 10:00 am – 9:00 pm

Now in its fifth year, Parked!, an annual convergence of New York food trucks presented by Mean Red Productions, pulls into the South Street Seaport on Saturday after previous stops at BKLYN Yard and on Governors Island. From 10:00 am to 9:00 pm, thirty of the city’s finest gourmet mobile eateries will be offering a potpourri of international edible excellence, along with live music by Anais Mitchell, Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queens, Two Man Gentlemen Band, and Mikey Palms, DJs, children’s activities (face painting, a temporary playground), cooking demonstrations, and more. If you’re worried about long lines, you can buy a $50 VIP pass that allows you access to an express lane, samples from any ten trucks, and one free drink, but it’s only good between 5:00 and 7:00, which makes no sense to us, but that’s the deal. (If they sell all five hundred passes, won’t that guarantee that there will be lines on the express lanes as well during that two-hour period?) Anyway, among the participating mobile vendors are main course possibilities Big D’s Grub, Frites ‘n’ Meats (back on the street after a terrible fire), Feed Your Hole, Gorilla Cheese, Kimchi Taco, La Cense Burger, Desi, Red Hook Lobster Pound, Schnitzel and Things, Mexicue, Taime Falafel, and Valducci’s Pizza, such dessert choices as CoolHaus Ice Cream, the Cinnamon Snail, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, Wafels & Dinges, the Cupcake Crew, and the Treats Truck, and such drink options as JoyRide, Kelvin Natural Slush Co., Green Pirate Juice, and Wooly’s Ice. In addition to their regular menus, the trucks will be selling specially selected items at five and eight dollars each. Bon appétit!

The food truck revolution in New York City is becoming overwhelming as new mobile eateries pop up every week, tweeting their changing locations, leaving lunching Gothamites’ heads spinning, not knowing what to look for when and where, just heading out onto the street and hoping a cool truck is somewhere nearby. So we’re thankful for events such as Sunday’s Food Truck Rally in Grand Army Plaza in front of Prospect Park, where eleven trucks will be stationed from 11:00 to 5:00. You can make up quite a multicourse menu of your own, with edamame, sesame noodle salad, and dumplings from the Rickshaw Dumpling Truck, artisanal grilled cheeses from Milk Truck, salads, bifteki sandwiches, and pita souvlakis from Souvlaki GR, personal pies from Eddie’s Pizza Truck, Belgian and sweet potato fries from the Frying Dutchmen, lobster and shrimp rolls from the Red Hook Lobster Pound, coffee from the Mud Truck, cookies, brownies, and crispy squares from the Treats Truck, unusual ice-cream flavors from Coolhaus, frozen yogurt from Joyride, and frosty floats from Kelvin Natural Slush Co. The event is sponsored by the NYC Food Truck Association and the Prospect Park Alliance and is a great opportunity to jump on the food truck bandwagon, if you haven’t already.
