Now in its ninth year, Summer Streets takes place the first three Saturday mornings in August, as Park Ave. will be closed to vehicular traffic from 72nd St. to Foley Square and the Brooklyn Bridge from 7:00 am to 1:00 pm, encouraging people to walk, run, jog, blade, skate, slide, and bike down the famous thoroughfare, getting exercise and enjoying the great outdoors without car exhaust, speeding taxis, and slow-moving buses. There are five rest stops along the route (Uptown at 52nd St., Midtown at 25th, Astor Pl. at Lafayette St., SoHo at Spring & Lafayette, and Foley Square at Duane & Centre), where people can relax and enjoy food and drink, live performances, fitness classes, site-specific art installations, dog walks, bicycle workshops, and other activities, all of which are free. The fortieth annual Museum Mile Festival will take place on Tuesday, June 13, as seven arts institutions along Fifth Avenue between 82nd and 105th Sts. open their doors for free between 6:00 and 9:00. There will be live outdoor performances by Fogo Azul Bateria Feminina, DJ Shabbakano, Carlos Jesus Martinez Dominguez & Leslie Jimenezin, Banda de lost Muertos, Silly Billy, and Sarah King and the Smoke Rings in addition to face painting, art and dance workshops, chalk drawing, and more. The participating museums (with at least one of their current shows listed here) are El Museo del Barrio (“Nkame: A Retrospective of Cuban Printmaker Belkis Ayón,” “uptown: nasty women / bad hombres”), the Museum of the City of New York (“New York at Its Core,” “AIDS at Home: Art and Everyday Activism”), the Jewish Museum (“Florine Stettheimer: Painting Poetry,” “The Arcades: Contemporary Art and Walter Benjamin”), the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum (“The Jazz Age: American Style in the 1920s,” “Esperanza Spalding Selects”), the Guggenheim (“Visionaries: Creating a Modern Guggenheim,” “The Hugo Boss Prize 2016: Anicka Yi, Life Is Cheap”), the Neue Galerie (“Austrian Masterworks from the Neue Galerie New York”), and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (“Irving Penn: Centennial,” “Lygia Pape: A Multitude of Forms”), along with presentations by the Little Orchestra Society, the New York Academy of Medicine, the 92nd St. Y, the Church of the Heavenly Rest, and Asia Society. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, now known as the Met Fifth Avenue with the addition of the Met Breuer in the old Whitney space, is the host of the thirty-ninth annual Museum Mile Festival, in which seven arts institutions along Fifth Avenue between 82nd and 105th Sts. open their doors for free between 6:00 and 9:00. (Met prez Daniel H. Weiss will deliver his opening remarks at 5:45.) There will be live outdoor performances by Dusan Tynek Dance Theatre, DJ Mickey Perez, Sammie & Trudie’s Imagination Playhouse, Mariachi Flor de Toloache, Silly Billy the Very Funny Clown, Miss 360, Alsarah and the Nubatones, Magic Brian, Kim David Smith, and Justin Weber Yo Yo in addition to face painting, art workshops, chalk drawing, and more. Why: On June 6, award-winning Manhattan-based journalist Soledad O’Brien, the founder and CEO of Starfish Media Group, which “produces experiential, character-driven, engaging documentaries that illuminate the dynamic and challenging issues facing real people today,” will be at El Museo del Barrio to host the New York stop of the ten-city touring program “I Am Latino in America.” The event will focus on empowering the Latino voice in today’s ever-changing society, particularly in light of the upcoming presidential election. For example, on her Latino in America Facebook page, O’Brien has recently broached such topics as the restructuring of Mexico’s diplomatic corps in response to a potential Trump presidency, Supreme Court nominees, Puerto Rican housing, prenatal race disparities, evangelical Latinos, immigrant deportation raids, voter ID restrictions, and how the census undercounted Latinos. For the April 26 panel discussion at SMU in Texas, O’Brien was joined by U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Javier Palomarez, actor Esai Morales, columnist Ruben Navarrette, Pinnacle Group chairman and CEO Nina Vaca, and others, while the October 2015 group at Occidental College in L.A. included immigration and education advocate Julissa Arce, Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas, U.S. congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, and actress Cristela Alonzo. El Museo del Barrio celebrates carnaval with the February edition of its free third Saturdays Super Sábado program. There will be a Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concert featuring Nation Beat; a meet-and-greet with NYC family ambassador Dora the Explorer; an arteXplorers Family Corner activity card; Colorín Colorado . . . with Something Positive Inc. bringing the story “Come Dance with Me” to life with carnaval characters Jab Molassie and Dame Lorraine and a participatory procession; a Movement Workshop with dancers from Conjunto Nuevo Milenio teaching traditional dances from El Palenque; a Manos a la Obra art workshop in which kids can make their own vejigante mask; and guided tours of the exhibitions “The Illusive Eye” and “Figure and Form: Recent Acquisitions to the Permanent Collection.”

Performa is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its biennial with another diverse lineup of live, cutting-edge performances, taking place at venues in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The festivities begin November 1 with a special opening-night benefit gala presentation ($250-$500) of Francesco Vezzoli and David Hallberg’s Renaissance-inspired Performa commission, Fortuna Desperata, at St. Bart’s and conclude November 22 with a Grand Finale party ($45) at Hôtel Americano, with the awarding of the Malcolm McLaren prize, which has previously gone to Ragnar Kjartansson and Ryan McNamara. One of the key participants this year is dancer and choreographer Jérôme Bel, whose Ballet (New York) ($15-$25) will be at the Marian Goodman Gallery November 6-7, the Martha Graham Studio Theater November 14-15, and El Museo del Barrio November 19; Bel will also teach a free Artist Class on November 5 at the Performa Hub at 47 Walker St. and will sit down for the free conversation “Don’t Just Sit There; Talking About Dance” with Performa head RoseLee Goldberg and the great Yvonne Rainer at Albertine on November 8. Meanwhile, from November 1 to November 18, Ryan Gander’s Ernest Hawker will feature an actor portraying the British artist’s future self at various Performa events; he will also give a free Artist Talk at the Performa Hub on November 2 at 3:00 with curator Mark Beasley. There’s really only one main problem with the annual Museum Mile Festival: It’s too short. On Tuesday, June 9, from 6:00 to 9:00, nine uptown art and cultural institutions will open their doors for free and fill Fifth Ave. between 82nd & 105th Sts. with family-friendly activities for the thirty-sixth year. There will be live outdoor performances by Calpulli Mexican Dance Company, Paul Miller aka DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid, Evolfo, Kim David Smith, the Martha Graham Dance Company, Sammie & Trudie’s Imagination Playhouse, Silly Billy the Very Funny Clown, and Magic Brian, in addition to face painting, art workshops, chalk drawing, and more. The participating museums (with at least one of their current shows listed here) are El Museo del Barrio (“Under the Mexican Sky: Gabriel Figueroa — Art and Film”), the Museum of the City of New York (“Saving Place: 50 Years of New York City Landmarks”), the Jewish Museum (“Revolution of the Eye: Modern Art and the Birth of American Television,” “Laurie Simmons: How We See”), the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum (“How Posters Work,” “Making Design”), the National Academy (“The Annual 2015: The Depth of the Surface”), the Guggenheim (“Storylines: Contemporary Art at the Guggenheim”), the Neue Galerie (“Gustav Klimt and Adele Bloch-Bauer: The Woman in Gold”), and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (“Van Gogh: Irises and Roses,” “Robert Motherwell: Lyric Suite”), along with the Africa Center (which is building a new home).
