With the city contemplating major rezoning of the Garment District, a group of experts are getting together tonight to discuss the future of the industry. Sponsored by the Municipal Art Society, “Made in Midtown: The Garment District Today & Tomorrow” will examine a study compiled by the Design Trust for Public Space (DTPS) and the Council of Fashion Designers of America, with a panel consisting of Sarah Crean of the New York Industrial Retention Network, Eric Gural of Newmark Knight Frank, Deborah Marton of the Design Trust, consultant Michael Meola, and designer Yeohlee Teng. The event, which will also look at the industry’s role in the city’s economic future, will be moderated by PROJECT RUNWAY’s Tim Gunn, kicking off a series of special activities that also include a walking tour of the Garment Center Historic District on June 13 ($15, 10:30 am), a panel on “Urban Creative Districts” on June 15 ($15, 6:30), and a tour of the Garment Center & New York’s Apparel Industry on June 25 ($15, 10:30 am).
