Rachid Taha (above) was oh-so-cool at SummerStage, smoking cigarettes, wearing great hats, grabbing the mic stand, and even draping himself in the Algerian flag, playing to a devoted crowd that sang along with every one of the French-Algerian rock star’s songs, culminating in his version of the Clash’s "Rock the Casbah." He was preceded by L.A.’s Dengue Fever, who played a groovy set of Cambodian rock, led by singer Chhom Nimol and guitarist Zac Holtzman. Apollo Heights opened the show, but the shreaking sound system was so annoying it was hard to listen to them. (photo by twi-ny/mdr)

River to River Festival: No Age, Telepathe, Abe Vigoda, South Street Seaport, 7:00

Tropical punk practitioners Abe Vigoda — one of our favorite band names ever— had an auspicious beginning to their July 12 free show at the South Street Seaport, as guitarist Juan Velazquez broke some strings on the first song and had to go backstage and borrow a guitar from No Age, friends of theirs from the downtown L.A. Smell scene. Battling nerves, the band, which also features Michael Vidal on guitar and lead vocals, Reggie Guerrero on drums, and David Reichart, wearing a No Age T-shirt, on bass, played a short set highlighting songs from their new disc, the excellent SKELETON, which had been released earlier that week. (By the way, for those of you old enough to remember BARNEY MILLER, Abe Vigoda himself is still alive, at the ripe old age of eighty-seven.) Abe Vigoda was followed by the droning Telepathe, from Brooklyn, and then No Age, who steamrolled through songs as security guards struggled to keep the barricades from coming down because of the force of the crowd. Village Voice Siren Festival, featuring Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, Broken Social Scene, the Helio Sequence, Beach House, Times New Viking, Jaguar Love, the Dodos, Annuals, Film School, Parts & Labor, Dragons of Zynth, These Are Powers, and more, Coney Island boardwalk, 12 noon - 9:00 pm

Since 2001, the Siren Festival has brought some of the best up-and-coming bands to Coney Island — as well as a handful of established indie stars and punk legends — including Guided by Voices, Yea Yeah Yeahs, Sleater-Kinney, Ted Leo and the Pharmacists, !!!, Death Cab for Cutie, TV on the Radio, Spoon, M.I.A., and the New York Dolls. On July 19, more than 100,000 fans ran between two stages, one on West Tenth St., the other on Stillwell Ave., trying to catch as many shows as they could at the eighth annual event. Groups such as Brooklyn’s Parts & Labor, Raleigh, North Carolina’s Annuals, San Francisco’s the Dodos, and Columbus, Ohio’s Times New Viking got things going with brief but hot sets in the midday heat, playing in the shadows of the Cyclone. Syracuse’s Ra Ra Riot, touring shortly before the release of their first full-length album, THE RHUMB LINE, played a strong, heartfelt set. (Their original drummer, John Ryan Pike, died in a tragic drowning accident the previous year.) Nicholas Thorburn led Montreal’s Islands to the Main Stage wearing a silver garbage can over his head and what appeared to be a bloodstained shirt. They were followed by headliners Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, with Toronto’s Broken Social Scene closing the night on the Stillwell Stage with a wild show that included bringing up a female fan to sing a song. With Coney Island’s future in doubt, this might have been the last such Siren Festival; if so, it went out on an extremely high note. (photo of Ra Ra Riot’s Wesley Miles by twi-ny/mdr)
