In addition to Broadway Week (September 2-15), during which two-for-one tickets are available in advance for such Great White Way shows as Once, Wicked, The Trip to Bountiful, Romeo and Juliet, and The Glass Menagerie, 20at20 is about to get under way, with twenty-dollar seats on sale twenty minutes before curtain for thirty-nine (what, they couldn’t have made it an even forty?) off-Broadway productions. For twenty days, from September 3 to 22, a Jackson will get you into such shows as The Accidental Pervert, Peter and the Starcatcher, Breakfast with Mugabe, The Two Character Play, Final Analysis, Unbroken Circle, Fuerza Bruta, Avenue Q, It’s Just Sex, and Philip Goes Forth. Just walk up to the box office twenty minutes before showtime (or earlier, since there is sure to be a line) and say “20 at 20” to get your ticket to that night’s show; it’s one per customer (make sure you have cash in case they’re not accepting credit cards), and the number of $20 tickets is limited and not guaranteed for every performance, but with empty seats abounding these days, this is a tough deal to pass up.

It’s time for the annual 20at20, when more than two dozen theatrical productions will be selling tickets for twenty bucks twenty minutes before curtain for nearly two weeks, including THE ACCIDENTAL PERVERT at the Players Theatre, ZERO HOUR: THE ZERO MOSTEL SHOW and BLACK ANGELS OVER TUSKEGEE at the Actors’ Temple Theatre, THE 39 STEPS and NAKED BOYS SINGING! at New World Stages, THE FLYING KARAMAZOV BROTHERS at the Minetta Lane Theatre, and NOW CIRCA THEN at Ars Nova, among others. While they might not be exactly the hottest shows out there, you can still save some big bucks, and you know that you’ve been dying to check out AWESOME 80s PROM at Webster Hall. When you reach the box office — there might be lines, of course, so get there a little early — just say “20at20” to receive the discounted ticket, one per person, as long as there are any left. Some theaters will accept cash only, so have those Andrew Jacksons ready.

Running concurrently with Restaurant Week, the annual 20 at 20 off-Broadway discount promotion is back, offering theater lovers the opportunity to get $20 tickets only 20 minutes before curtain. Nearly two dozen shows are participating in the program, including Sam Shepard’s AGES OF THE MOON, starring Stephen Rea and Seán McGinley; Delia and Nora Ephron’s LOVE, LOSS, AND WHAT I WORE, with a rotating cast of women that currently features Katie Finneran, Michele Lee, Debra Monk, Tracee Ellis Ross, and Casey Wilson; John Douglas Thompson in Eugene O’Neill’s THE EMPEROR JONES; Jim Brochu as Zero Mostel in ZERO HOUR; Nina Arianda and Wes Bentley in David Ives’s VENUS IN FUR; and Layon Gray’s BLACK ANGELS OVER TUSKEGEE, in addition to FUERZA BRUTA, NAKED BOYS SINGING, SMUDGE, THE FANTASTICKS, CIRCUMCISE ME, and others. (Please note that some shows are closing January 31.) Lines could form early, so don’t necessarily expect to show up at 7:40 and get tickets, which are one per person and might be cash only at some theaters.
