The 123rd annual Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Paulinus of Nola is under way, featuring nearly two weeks of children’s rides and activities, Italian delicacies, parades, games, a bazaar, live performances, and, of course, the lifting of the eighty-foot-tall, three-ton, vertical Giglio, which 130 men will carry on Sunday, July 11, along with la barca. Tonight is the children’s Giglio, with July 10 the Questua procession, July 14 the Night Lift, July 16 Our Lady of Mount Carmel Day, and July 18 Old Timers’ Day. Other highlights include the Brooklyn Keys on July 10, Uncle Floyd with Mark Pizzano on July 12, Angelo Ruggiero on July 16, and Sal Manzo on July 17. The feast celebrates how Bishop Paolino sacrificed his own freedom for those abducted by North African pirates in the fifth century, later to be returned to Nola in southern Italy and greeted by the townspeople holding gigli, or lilies.

One of the most highly anticipated street fairs of the year, the annual Bastille Day celebration along East 60th St. is always a fun-filled day of French food and music, sponsored by the French Institute Alliance Française. The festivities honor the storming of the Bastille prison on July 14, 1789, paving the way for the French Revolution. Among the live performers appearing on the main stage will be Michèle Voltaire Marcelin telling Haitian stories in krik-krak style, Pierre de Gaillande singing George Brassens tunes in English, and Gay Marshall channeling Edith Piaf in addition to concerts by Malika Zarra and Les Sans Culottes. There will also be stationary Tour de France bike races, the annual Garçons de Café race with waiters holding serving trays making their way down the street, a Citroën Car Show, mimes, an accordion player, and other events combining for an entertaining mix of both cool and strange. If it gets too hot outside, you can head into the FIAF gallery for ticketed wine and cheese tastings or beer and cheese pairings in the lobby ($8-$15).

Since 1916, Nathan’s has been sponsoring a hot dog eating contest in which men and women from all over the world compete to see who can devour the most hot dogs (and buns) in twelve minutes, now reduced to ten. Each contestant has his or her own method; some dunk the bread in water before swallowing, while others just stuff the slimy dogs down their throats. After six years of dominance by Takeru Kobayashi, Joey Chestnut has come up big the last three years, setting a new world record of sixty-eight dogs in 2009, keeping the Coveted Mustard Yellow International Belt where it belongs. (Chestnut has also held records in asparagus, chicken wings, grilled cheese sandwiches, gyoza, horseshoe sandwiches, jalapeno poppers, Krystal Burgers, Pizza Hut P’Zones, pork ribs, pulled pork, and sausage and cheese Kolaches.) Unfortunately, Kobayashi has pulled out of this year’s event, bringing to an end this heated annual rivalry. The festivities begin at 10:00 with a performance by Xclusive with Sonni Dey and DJ 80HD, followed by acrobats, magic acts, trampoline performers, and rapper (and longtime contest participant) Eric “Badlands” Booker, with the competition set to start at noon.
