The MTA Transit Museum regularly schedules fascinating, unique tours of the subway and bus systems throughout the city, going into tunnels, investigating waterfronts, sponsoring old-time cars for trips to Coney Island, and other fun, informative travels. For Earth Day, New York City Transit’s Green Team will take visitors into the New Corona Car Washer and Maintenance Facility in Queens, where Chief Environmental Engineer Tom Abdallah and Chief Officer of Environmental Sustainability Colette Ericsson will talk about the MTA’s commitment to going green, followed by a tour of the facility led by Assistant General Manager Ray DelValle. Called the “Taj Mahal of Sustainability,” the operation features solar panels, a fuel cell, natural lighting and ventilation, recycled and locally produced materials, a rainwater collection system, and other environmentally friendly methods. The Corona shop’s approach to water and energy conservation helped it receive an honorable mention for “excellence in integrating sustainable design strategies into a railcar maintenance facility” at the USEPA’s first New York City Green Buildings Design Competition in 2004.
